XP home upgrade help

Hello all. I have a friend that has a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. He had some virus problems and in the process of fixing it he killed a boot sector in Windows . I used my XP home upgrade disk to repair the install (because he can't find his recovery disk). But now when I boot into windows at the desktop there is a error COMRes.dll was not found, and I can't click on any thing. I would like to know if I could just reinstall Windows with my XP home upgrade disk and his serial key.Would this work?

nope it won't work! dell uses oem versions windows and the cd keys are different! your friend will either need to find his recovery cd's or buy a new windows license

I know the cd keys are different but I will use the key from his lap top. Will windows know the difference between my OEM home upgrade and the standard oem home that it came with?

Have you contacted Dell about maybe getting another recovery disk?

I've had to do this after loading Linux on PCs before. This is what has worked for me:

If you have a OEM (non-manufacture specific) copy of XP. Insert it and let it load, when the prompt comes up to reformat/clean-install, delete the entire partition that the prior o/s was stored on, then eject the disk and start from scratch with the recovery disk. Dell should send a replacement for a small shipping charge.
