need help changing my IP address

Im using win xp, a netgear wgr614v5 router, and its DHCP..

ive tried a couple different ways, the first attempt was to ipconfig /release then go into my network connections and tell it to use a specific IP which was jibberish, followed by going back in and telling it to find its own IP.. I think that doesn't work because I am on a router

my next attempt was to make it a static IP address and just change the last number, I read somewhere I should be assigned like a group of IPs which just differ in the final number set of my ip.. so if it was 130, i tried 129, 136, 132, 133.. etc i never had an active internet after changing it this way..

i think i successfully changed it to a static ip using my current ip ( or at least I still had a connection after I changed all that thru my router's setup

Welcome to RR.
First off are you trying to change your network IP, or the routers IP. You can not change the IP address given to the router by your ISP.

You should be able to change your network IP's within the given range as you stated. For example 192.168.0.1xx (Note:This is for a D-Link router) meaning the last set of numbers can be within the range of 100-199. I am not familiar with Netgear routers, Sorry. I would suggest that you try our sister site TechIMO (Tech In MY Opinion). You'd get more help over there then here at RR.
