Java runtime update

I wanted to install a program, and the program said I must do a few upgrades in order for installation. Java runtime and active X must be installed.
How can I safly find upgrades without running the risk of picking up some bad file from some fake site. I am carefull in the stuff I download.
Is there a place to safely get files?

If you have Windows and Internet Explorer, then you have ActiveX. If you have not already upgraded to the Microsoft .NET 3.0 runtime, then it would be a good idea.

The official Java runtime for Windows is provided by Sun Microsystems.

.NET and Java allow software to be built to a exacting specification, but deployed on various platforms. In other words, think of them as intermediate layers between the application and operating system.

I also invite you to check out TechIMO, our dedicated technical community. You registered back when we had TechIMO and ResellerRatings connected, so your ResellerRatings login should work at TechIMO as well.

If you download the latest Java software (J2SE Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 10) it should include a feature that checks for updates automatically. You can customize this automatic update feature (i.e. change the frequency or turn it off) in the Java Control Panel which can be accessed from the Control Panel. If you use the category view for Control Panel in Windows XP, it is under Other Control Panel Options.
