Regarding your apps, may try StarOffice ... version 6 should be out later this year, its supposed to be a big step up.
also look into WINE, or WineX they may allow you to run some winders apps under Linux.
Regarding AOL... why?
Theres so many better options.
However, if you must I know Jacob was mentioning a small app that may allow you to use AOL's bastardized version of TCP/IP in Linux but can't remember the name of it or where he found it.

Linux don't do too well with integrated cards (and I think your modem and sound are integrated -- I could be wrong!).
If you want a windows emulator, I have heard that Wine does a good job!
If you want windows like apps, there are bunch of places to go!
I think linux can do almost everything the same or better (or worse ) than windows!
Good luck with it!

why are there 3 different interfaces? bec linux is about CHOICE. if you dont like gnome,
try kde, if you dont like kde try blackbox,
and theres many more to try.
and also many good browsers, many good text editors .......

yep and many more you've probably never heard of lol
If you want pretty with a lot of tools try KDE or Gnome
If you want quick and light no BS, use fvwm or maybe blackbox or fluxbox... That doesn't mean they're not pretty btw, just not as heavy
To give you an idea of how light these things are I downloaded both blackbox and fluxbox and they were in general a 350-400k download
Now lets see explorer do that?
talk about a 400lb gorilla |
