I think we need to know a lot more. What OS are you running? Win98, 2000, XP Pro or what?
What messages are you getting when you're booting up. Please be as specific as possible.

The easiest remedy might be to do a clean install of the OS
A new hard disk goes cheap these days, so a clean install on a new drive would be great. Then you can access your precious files on the old drive later if that drive is still healthy

Reinstalling everything from scratch, including the OS, is a good habit. At least every other year.
