The reason im thinking it could be sdram or ddr in the XP box is the time frame, there were boards at that time that would take either for cheaper upgrading.

If you feel up to it yipyiaa, take a stick out of each, examine it, and post how many notches are in each one. SDram has 2 notches in the bottom of the stick, DDR has 1.

That will help clear up a few things.

Posting some numbers off the sticks can help as well.

Buying another hard drive will not necessarily help, a faster hard drive tied to a board with a slow tranfer rate will help little.

You can D/L that and run it to tell you and us a LOT about your system.

You wanna get a quick accurate description of what you got for memory?

Go to Crucial.com and click the "Scan My System" link/button where it says "The Crucial System Scanner". This will let you download a little executable to your HDD. Don't worry, it's completely safe and you can just keep the application in your Downloads folder for future use. It scans your memory and specs and automatically opens a browser window to Crucial's web site displaying the results. It will tell you ALL specs of your RAM, how much you have per stick, how many sticks, what type, case latency, voltage, bus speed, etc., how many slots you have, how many of the slots are filled, how much memory your motherboard will max out at and of course it will offer comparable suggestions of upgrades of their brand RAM, which is very, very exceptional quality but a little over priced. A lot comparable and cheaper RAM on Newegg. Anyway, download that little app., copy and paste the results here.

Personally, I don't think memory is your issue. If Pinnacle said that the data transfer rate is too slow, it's either talking about the speed of your cable connection or the actual bus speed of your RAM, not the size of the RAM. Are you sure it's a 1394 connection or is it USB 2.0?? If they're talking about the bus speed, you have no control over that, anyway. Besides, 512MB should be plenty of RAM. I currently have 512 in my laptop just cuz that's what it came with. I'm upgrading to 2 gig in a couple weeks but with the 512, I play higher end games like Halo, Doom3, Need for Speed and Half Life2. I would think if it will handle those it should be sufficient for ripping the movie files off of your camcorder.

* DirectX 9 or higher compatible graphics card (ATI Radeon or Nvidia Geforce 2 or higher recommended)
* DirectX 9 or higher compatible sound card
* 500 MB of disk space to install software
* CD-ROM drive
