Windows XP does not recognize Mitsumi CD-RW

I have a HP Pavilion 510a [HP Product Specifications], Intel 810e motherboard. The Cd-rw is a Mitsubi cr-4848TE.

I had no trouble until I replaced my hard drive, then XP simply wouldn't recognize it.
It is not in Device manager.
I have checked all the plugs.
It opens/closes and makes spinning noises when I put in a disk. It seems very much alive.
I have fiddled with the registry, deleting the UpperFilter and the LowerFilter values from
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr o l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

XP is supposed to be compatable with the drive and it was, so the error seems to lie in the current config of XP.

Any ideas?

Does the BIOS see the CD-R when you power up?

I'd check the jumper settings on the new hard drive;
Set the hard drive as Master (with slave), set the CD-R as slave,
make sure that both are on the same cable.

If XP doesn't see the CD-R, the BIOS probably can't see it either.

The jumper settings are the likely culprit.

Ok. thanks! This did the trick.

The only problem now is that the cables don't twist and stretch enough for them to fit it thier slots.

Being able to have the HD as slave and CD as master, or being able to have them on different cables would be nice. I am fairly certain they were on different ones when I first bought it.

But, yeah, otherwise it is all working great!

Glad I could help.

It isn't necessary for both to be on the same cable. It depends on what other IDE devices are in the computer. If these are the only IDE drives in the system, put each on a separate cable as Master or single.

I assumed that the drives already shared a cable; otherwise, you would not have lost the CD-R when you switched hard drives.

The number of drives and their physical location will dictate what cables need to be shared.
