Depending on what type of video and the amount of graphics you will need at least 2gigs of RAM and 3.0 and up processor. My system is a bit older but here is what I have for the HP Workstaion xw8000;
2Gigs RAM
3.05 GHz Intel Xeo
NVidea Quadro 4 980 XGL
60 gb HD x2
I have external HD's for all my video/audio storage which are Avid. Of course Avid probably uses Seagate or Maxtor etc. They are RAID 0 configured and use SCSI (yea I know old tech but hey it works for now) 4x 70 GB
When your doing video editing do yourself a favor and get a second monitor. You'll need the real estate...trust me.

They'd both be appropriate. I'm not even sure that there'd be a major difference in performance for the task.

For the most part all editing programs have the same basics. Depending on what program you are using you will have the following windows:
Timeline; where your video and audio clips are laid out.
Viewing window: plays whats on your timeline
Preview Window: Play and preview clips that you want to put on your timeline.
A good picture example of this is here http://www.avid.com/images/xpressScr...imeline_lg.jpg

You will notice "bins" on the left hand side of the screen. These are where all of your video clips are stored. Most of the time I edit with these open, controls for editing audio and an effect editing window open on the left hand monitor while what is in the picture is on the right hand monitor. Trust me I used to edit with one monitor and its nothing short of a pain in the ass trying to keep track of what windows are opened and closed. If you would like I can try and post a pic of my set up so you can see what I have on both monitors.
