Upgrade to faster cpu

I recently upgraded my 350mhz computer to xp and it works great, i used to run windows 98 on it which was pretty slow, now i would like to upgrade to a faster cpu, what should i get?
I'm thinking of around 1.5 ghz, what would i need to do or would i be better off starting from scratch with a new machine?

If you are at 350 Mhz right now you have 1 of a few choices.

You have a super socket 7 mobo, fastest you can get in there is a 550 Mhz amd k6-3 550Mhz CPU, if its supported

You have a slot 1 motherboard with a PII 350, fastest you will probably find supported in that one is 450Mhz or so, after that the slot 1 PIII debuted and they were differant voltages, higher front side busses and what not.

You are probably looking at a Motherboard and CPU upgrade if you really want to go much faster than you are now. Depending on the choice it might require newer RAM, video card and sound.

My Gateway E-3200 desktop has a slot1 motherboard that originally had a 300MHz Pentium II. I upgraded it to a 1.1GHz Pentium III via a Super Slocket III for a total of $36.

You should also look into adding RAM. This same computer had only 64MB at first, but I brought it to 512MB. It's now as fast as some Pentium 4 machines that I have used!
