Dell Dimesion 4600

I just put a new hardrive in this computer. I installed Win XP Home. I used the the installation disk that came with the computer. This install took over 10 hours+.

Does anybody know what the problem is here?

I've installed Win XP many times before and it took roughly 2 hours.

Any help please...

Food Wow!

Did you format the HDD before the install? I would imagine it would add some time formatting a 500G drive. (Not 10 hours though..) Have you ever used the restore cd before? I have recently encountered an issue where the restore cd that came with a certain pc took about 10 hours to install XP (overnight)... but when I used my own actual copy of XP it only took about 45 minutes. Also, tho it isn't highly likely, it could be your cd drive. Saw something similar to that on a recent server install.... a CDROM drive that had worked fine at the office went bad when we installed the server at our COLO. Try installing something else, like a game or something. If the drive works fine on that, I would suspect the actual CD.... Let me know what you find and I will try to help you troubleshoot

I did format the hardrive before I installed the O.S.

I've tested the the computer using #1TuffTEST Pro and it hasn't found anything wrong with the hardware of the computer.

I have Win Xp Pro. I could try using that and see what happens.

I also disconnected the CD-rom's to see if they were creating any conflicts. It didn't help any.

I've notied the computer is laboring alot just sitting idle. Just when I open up the Task Manager it robs the computer of %40 of its resources.

It's a 2.4Ghz P4

I'm going to try to install Service Pack 2 and see what happens.

Thanks for the quick reply.
