program to create home DVD

Hi guys. I have collected a variety of videos of my friends race their cars with my camcorder and have converted them to avi files on my hard drive. Now that I have a large enough collection, I would like to make some sort of DVD that will allow me to share it with everyone by having chapters and all the works just like a real DVD theater movie. What program(s) are there that I can use that are free or for shareware? Thanks!

the latest version of nero is probably the simplest solution i have seen for this. the mpeg encoder plugin is a must, but i beleive the "mediahome" aplication is what you can use to convert the file and create the DVD ready for burning. it supports not only a menu editor, witht he ability to insert your own pictures, but it has a cool remote control graphic for you to fix the remote control's functionality to your DVD (and make use of additional buttons some players may have on their remote)

I agree with Johnny, Nero 6 Ultra is a good program for what you want to do.

the best dvd creation software I have seen is tmpgenc author. it has a 30 day trial I believe as well. It puts nero to shame. Although I do have and use Nero 6.1.16 Ultra as well.

ulead

Another program worth checking out is Ulead DVD workshop
You can get a 30-day trial, this is an excellent entry-level program and very user friendly. You can get the studio-author look using drag & drop features within minutes.
All the conversions are done automatically for you when burining the final DVD, before that you have a nice preview mode that will show you how the final DVD might look like.
Nero Ultra is not a free software, it is also not aimed for DVD authoring, not that its bad (I'm using Nero 6.6 myself) but if you are more creative person you should check out Ulead.

NR.
