So where's the drive???

I have this really nice storage array sitting in a box so I decide to put into production. It is a PowerStor 6000 DUAL-HOST ULTRA2 SCSI RAID RACKMOUNT with 6 - 18 GB SCSI drives. It is all configured for Raid 5 at the moment giving me one slice of 80 GB.

I boot the W2K Server and I see the PowerStor listed under the Adaptec 2940 card. Once Windows is up, I can see the PowerStor SCSI disk device under Device Manager -> Disk Drives.

I do NOT see the drive in any way or fashion listed anywhere!

I am really new to this so any ideas????

Don't scsi raid drives need to be formatted too? Can you see them in disk manager?

I do not see any drives in the disk manager other than the local SCSI drive. If the PowerStor drives are not formatted, I would still see them just not able to access them.

I went into the SCSI BIOS at boot and it listed the adaptec card and PowerStor drive so I am not sure what the deal is.

Update!

After deleting the raid 5 setup and running the config prog again, W2K sees the device but no drives. Adaptec card sees the device but the wrong size. So basically I am in the same position.

After calling the tech support and them saying, "Thats weird, I have not seen that before." I know I am on my own though I do preform the token "lets try this" suggestions.

After taking out the Adaptec card and trying it other machines with the same result, I am getting no where fast.

After deleting the raid 5 setup once again and running the config prog once again, W2K now sees the device, dynamic disk, and allows me to create volumes!!!

After done nothing different from before, I now am up and running with 90GB of raid.

After all this, I am a happy camper!!

New update!!

I should have updated this before but oh well. So everything was going good until I had to reboot the server. Once I rebooted, guess what, no drives again!!

If I restart the storage array and rescan for hardware, I could find the drives I created. Not too bad, but not good either. I would have to reset the thing everytime I rebooted.

Calling tech support again resulted in no more info than the last time so time to start playing musical parts.

The SCSI card I was using was an Adaptec 2940 U2W which is a good card. So I tried another model and the same result. I decide to put the new card into a XP box cause I was testing W2K all the time. Low and behold, it works!!!

Think now that drivers have to be the issue, I put the new card into the W2K machine, update the driver from MS and presto. Now I did install new drivers on the 2940, but no luck then. So all is well.

BTW, I tried latest drivers from Adaptec and also flashed new SCSI bios to the 2940 and it still did not work right. Also tried another 2940 card just in case the original was bunk.
