Home Networking!!????

Ok so monday i am finally going to get high speed internet. I am going to get cable, from road runner. I also have 2 computers, but i rather buy the hardware and connect it myself then pay the montly fees they charge. I was thinking that i would buy the Lynksys Wireless 802.11G Broadband Router (WRT54G) to the cable modem, and then connect one computer to the routers hub and another 1 will be wireless. Will this setup work? What about security, what can i do about it?

Thanks in advance,

Carlos

yeah that set-up should work fine, as for security do your basic set-up and then you'll want to enable mac filtering as well as WPA encryption{so far un-breakable}

MAC filtering is painfully easy to break, WEP is much harder and moe time consuming, and WPA is only as good as it's passphrase.

WPA can be brut force broken, and is suseptable to DoS attacks, whereas WEP needs a considerable ammount of dedicated time to break, actually making it more secure than a WPA network with a weak passphrase (less than 8 characters without a combination of numbers, letters and special characters)

the thing you must ask yourself is, who am i likely to run into who will want access to my network, and is there anything on my network i need to protect?

simple basics of windows security can lead an attacker to only have access to your internet connection if they break your wireless security. the real point is, why would anything on your wireless network justiy someone spending the time to break into it?

going by this logic, you can easily determine whther just mac address filtering to keep the casual leach off your netowrk will work, or if WEP or WPA is in order if you live in a high trafic area with a multitude of random passers by.

WEP is hardware, which makes it relatively efficient, so its not a bad alternative to prevent the casual war driver/walker off your network.
