upgrade to 6600
I have finally decided to get rid of the good old mx440 [dont ask why so late], and I am looking for a midrange nVidia agp card. My current focus is on the Asus N6600/TD 128mb DDR1.
I have 2 questions -
- What do people around here think of this card [the 6600 in general and the N6600/TD specifically]?
- My board would take agp4x tops, would running this agp 8x card at 4x cause any major problems?
I am not looking for insane performance... just for a solid reliable card to last me another several years.
thanks.

First, I have to recommend a 6600GT for ~$40 more because it's much more powerful and faster than the 6600.
Second, is this the card you were looking to get? http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16814121197
The bottom line is that even a 6600 will prove to be a major upgrade compared to the gf4 you have now, but the 6600GT will last you longer.

thanks for replying so fast,
I would go for the GT but I am short on $$... I do know the differences between them [GDDR3 vs 1, mem/core speed etc...]., and yes the card on newegg is the model I am looking for. thing is- in system req's, it says agp8x slot, I've got a 4x one - how significant is that [in terms of stability]??

Well the fact is that all AGP 8x cards are backwards compatible in AGP 4x slots, however, I've heard that some people using AGP 4x mobos have had a few problems.... me not being one of them, I cannot help you out much in that field.

that's exactly my point, all AGP 8x cards are backwards compatible in AGP 4x slots, however, there have been numerous problems with users who have tried to use the new series of cards in AGP 4x mobos.

one more thing.. i think a new 6 series card [no matter which one] will get choked by the rest of the system - with these specs, is it worth the upgrade?
P4 Northwood 2.4B/533 [512kb L2]
GA8IE800 [i845E]
512Mb DDR266 [2.5-3-3-6]
WD 60Gb UATA100 HDD
GeForce4 MX440 4x to any GeForce 6 Series [on 4x]
thanks,
