i scratched my laptop monitor....
I scratched the screen of my dell inspiron 8100... it doesn't look like a deep scratch though.... it looks more like a smudge..... someone dropped a cardboard box with some books in it....
at first I thought that it was some goo from the packing tape that was holding the box together... I tried wiping it off with a little water and a cloth... and it seems to temporarily disappear, but then it comes back... all the time...
i'm afraid to try any other sort of cleaning agent so as not to totally jack up my screen, but I want to get rid of these smudges...
can anyone please help me out here... I'm totally at a loss!
thanks

I think that the screen has been cracked. You might be screwed.

Yep, sounds cracked. I think the cleaning agent would be filling the crack temporarily and make it appear gone.

well... i've never seen a cracked screen, but i really, really don't think that is the case here. I probably didn't explain it clearly enough... it looks like a smudge almost... (sort of like when you kick a black soled shoe on the floor of a gym or something like that)
anyway, does that help at all with your diagnoses??

Oh, okay. And you've tried really hard to take it off with maybe a warm rag (get as much water out of it as possible. You dont wanna ruin your lappy ) and a lot of scrubbing?

well... that's pretty much the reason that I'm asking for help... My understanding is that most of these laptop monitors are some sort of strange polymer and I don't want to do anything that involves "scrubbing" and potentially screwing it up more unless i'm pretty sure that it's not gonna do to much damage....
hehe

I have rubbed down my Inspiron 8000's display ( powered off or course ) with warm water to remove markes ( that look like scratches) before, I would think that as long as you make sure you use a soft material, you can rub relatively hard to get them out.
Just my 2 cents

Well I had an old gateway laptop years ago that had like a smudge that wouldn't go away. I knew what it was from, a friend of mine was looking at it and thought it was so cool and thought it was a odd looking screen and took his fingernail and scratched it. turns out it wasn't cracked but the stuff under the screen is like a gel of some sort or something, I am not sure, but if you slightly press on the screen you can see the pictures distorting in that area, I tried to clean this off to but it didn't work, so I just ended up livign with it and everytime i saw it i would remember the night of it happening.
I somehow don't think its cracked but rather just underneath the surface of the screen has been scratched enough to leave a permanant mark.
I worry of my flat panel of kids doing that to it and I tell them hands OFF the monitor.
I am also told not to use chemicals on these types of monitors and only use a soft cotten cloth and water and lightly rub the monitor face down but NOT to rub hard or it can damage it.
I could be wrong as my expereince with this is limited. If your laptop is still under warrrenty why not call the company you purshaced it from and asked them if it can be repair or replaced or whatever under your warrenty.
Sorry If i am not helping much.
