true king, i emailed him a while back and pmed him but no response. as for buying a gateway i wouldn't even touch one with a ten foot pole. there computers are poorly designed and terrible support. i use gateway, dells, micron laptops at work all the time and the gateways always gave us a load of problems. hence why i wanted dell. also why bring up gateway in this post about DELL? its not like hes gonna drop his laptop off and say hey gateway sounds great. Im pro quality computers, alright ill admit i haven't been impressed with there desktops (but i have only used one since i build my own)
i just thought maybe if zskill comes by some time that he will notice this post, as i feel his pain with a scratched monitor

Got nothing against Toshiba. It was my other choice when I bought my Sony.

As far as laptops go, if Gateway makes AMD laptops (I have no idea if they do or not), I would get one over a Dell simply because Dell does not offer AMD products. I don't think the quality is too much different. Mainly just cosmetics, and what type of software you get with it.

Dell blows... nuff said, At OSU Library we rent out laptops for students to use, we have 35 Dell and 40 sony, We have had to send in the dells 57 times in two years for service, the sony's we have had to send in 13 times and we have 5 more of those. There is not a better situation that I can think of to test a laptops duration then in a public use situation.

no offense to bopper but maybe people are drawing conclusions from the hardware that made gateway famous
lol telepath modems (did anyone get one to work?)
the crystal scan monitor (omg what junk)
the number nine cards that weren't (anyone remember that? cost gateway millions in lawsuits)
the anniversary cases that weren't (again cost gateway millions in lawsuits)
the list goes on and on and so do the lawsuits
financially speaking dell is doing better why would that be ??? if gateway is so great??
i think the opinion of techs that work on both products would be more indicative that dell is a superior product.
i think the opinion of a tech that works for gateway would be biased towards their products and i am sure the company is grateful someone needs to believe it
by the way is gateway still subcontracting their tech support to call centers?

Gateway Sucks...
Why does gateway suck? Well, from a computer repair standpoint, I have a few reasons. For one, they have these screws that require a moon shaped screwdriver for easy removal (the screws are round so a wrench won't work...the only way to get them out is to use pliers and it takes forever). Two, their cases absolutely suck because you have to remove 18 bajillion parts just to remove the hard drive or floppy. Three, because my company also sells computers, I realize that building a quality machine is not that hard at all, especially when you use good quality parts. Someone already said "nvidia makes a lot of video cards" and they were exactly right. Some nvidia cards absolutely suck, and most of the Gateway machines I have worked on have had the suck nvidias with 6ns chips made in Mexico. When your computer runs out of warranty, or if you want to add a peripheral before it does, a computer repair shop will wince and start dry heaving when they see you walk in with a Gateway. Dell is better, they make more money, and they're even cheaper most of the time. Gateway? What a joke. I especially like the Gateway stores...you can walk in and ask them if they have something really common, like a round ide cable, and they'll look at you like they have no clue what you're talking about. A bunch of geniuses, if you will. Anyway, that's my rant.

Oh yeah, we called Gateway to get them to send/sell us a screwdriver so we could take out those damn moon shaped/half hex shaped screws, and they were not to eager to do so. Considering, however, that they are required by law to do so, we threatened legally and they sent the screw driver as requested. So, if there are any computer shops out there that have to deal with the same thing (and not all gateways use these screws), give them a call and demand a screwdriver.

I just went to the Dell website, and couldn't find any type of warranty like that. If Dell doesn't have that type of warranty upgrade available then these words ring true. You shoulda bought a Gateway, friend. | This is from the Dell Complete Care Agreement... Quote:
2. Scope of Services:
c. Repair and Replacement Service. During the term of this Agreement and subject to the limitations in this Agreement, we will repair or replace the Product as necessary to correct any damage to or defects in the Product. For example, under this Agreement, we will repair or replace the Product if it is damaged because:
• You spill liquid on the keyboard
• You accidentally drop the Product
• An electrical surge damages the Product’s internal circuitry
• The LCD/monitor cracks or shatters in extreme temperatures
