It depends on what warrantee you got with it I would think. It should be listed on your invoice if you aren’t sure. The one I got is this:

Type 3 Contract - NextBusiness Day PartsLabor On-Site Response
- They have already replaced my DVD-ROM drive ( that I slightly knocked off track by trying to push a CD onto it a little too hard ) and my hard drive since it was making a noise I didn’t recognize. Both replacement parts were sent to me by the next day with no charge

I work for Gateway.
If Dell is the same as Gateway in Warranty Repair work, a cracked screen is not covered, because it is not a defect of the product itself, but of Mishandling, or abuse of the product.

Gatewqay has an accidental Damage protection warranty that costs extra but DOES cover a cracked screen. you might want to check with Dell to see if they have a warranty upgrade like that. If they do, buy it, and then in a few days, or a couple of weeks call em up, and say you cracked your screen.

It may sound like cheating, because that is exactly what it is. If you tell the company that you have a cracked sscreen first they proably will not sell you the warranty until the screen is replaced. LCD screens are the most expensive part of the laptop, and you could be looking at a thousand dollars or more depending on the size of the screen.

Gateway sells their supplamental(SP?)Accidental Damage protection either at the point of Sale, or as an add-on later on. I would deifnately check that angle first. Gateways ADD protection warranty upgrade is 160 bucks. much better than a thousand bucks for sure.

I just went to the Dell website, and couldn't find any type of warranty like that. If Dell doesn't have that type of warranty upgrade available then these words ring true. You shoulda bought a Gateway, friend.

I don't see anything like a moneyback Guarantee either. I am sure they have one though. Ours is that you can perm return the system if you are not happy with it within the first 30 days less the cost of Shipping of course. if you are within 30 you might wannt to give that thing back, and get a Gateway.

I know I am going to get flamed by Pro Dell ppl, and the ppl that build there own systems, so just save it. I am just giving this guy some options with a slight Gateway bias.

I happen to look at the world through Holstein colored glasses...
Later doods.

Accidental damage protection:
Dell: $288.00 total.
Gateway: $159.00 total.
Gateway has a 3yr warranty included in the price of the PC, which by the way if you compare like for like systems Gateways cost less than Dells.

Hmm... seems like the smart money is on the cheaper one, don't you think?

And once again I am not asking to be Forum whipped by blood thirsty Militant Dell users that got screwed, and are seemingly proud of it.
thank you again.

That a fact? Where do you draw your conclusions from?

We use the same parts. there arent that many vendors for different parts out there.
we use intel boards, they use intel boards.
We uase AMD boards they use AMD boards.
we use Maxtor, IBM, what have you HDD's, They use Maxtor, IBM, what have you HDD's.
we use Nvidia, Voodoo, ATI video cards, they do too.
see what I mean?
The Industry is not so huge as to have exclusive vendors for the components that go into building a computer. Any Company that would do that would not last long on the open market.
As to looking cooler, well I guess if you like a black case sure, but then again. I do not buy a computer for how it looks. I buy one for what I can do with it.

Good luck in all your misadventures sir, I wish you well.

waaaaait a second....

"we use Nvidia,"

There are many many brands of nvidia boards... many better than others...

And generally it seems Dell computers being of higher quality.
