Intel vs. AMD

This is the latest results from the AMD vs. Intel, and AMD is winning, according to Maximum PC. However, this has prompted Intel to include 64-bit support, via AMD's code. This is a big win for AMD, since Intel has never needed to use AMD's codes (3D-NOW!), but AMD happily uses Intel code (SSE, SSE2, etc.). I don't want to breach any copyrights, so I will just post the wins-
AMD 64 FX-55 won:applications-3, 3D benchmarks-6, gaming-3
Intel Pentium 4 570J @ 3.8 GHz-Benchmarks-5
Intel Pentium 4 EE @ 3.46 GHz-1 Benchmark
There you have it. Let the arguing begin!

Can AMD see it through?

Hopefully AMD can make enough money to stay head to head with Intel...and hopefully they do not pick up any of Intel's bad design habits.

I still laugh at the results on www.anandtech.com showing how an A64 3000+ is comparable to P4 3.8GHz in Half Life 2.

I'm doubting you'll get many people to chime in on this discussion as it has been had time and time again, especially at resellerrattings' sister site techimo.

But there is no doubt that AMD has the better Arcitecture these days. With better prices, and and extreamly competitive performance in all catigories these days often besting other offerings; there is little reason to look elsewhere for a CPU.

But I speak mostly for the homebuilt and expensive prebuilt options. If someone is looking for a (semi)reliable machine for a very good price It seams the most bang for the buck can still be had with larger manufacturers and Intel. I really do wonder how much cheaper Intel Chips are for these large players like Dell, Gateway, etc. It perplexes me as to why more mainstream OEM builders haven't moved on to bigger and better things when there are obviously superior products that could (possibly?) be had for a lower price.

And then you just have the people that like a particular brand, just for the brand name's sake. Informed people make decisions on what they need, often you see people buying brand X just because they've heard alot about it. That's where advertiseing kicks in and really it is the only place that AMD is lacking. It's a good thing for word of mouth though, because many people have been better informed as to what would be best for them on sites like this.

Apple

The thing about people just getting attached to a particular vendor they are used to is true.

I was reading a review and the attached forum on the Pc World attempt to benchmark Apple G5s against a selection of PCs running AMD A64 and FX chips...

The pain and suffering the Apple fans went through refusing that AMDs chips were comparable or better than the G5 in many of these tests, however biased, was amazing...

They were irrational, emotional and sometimes abusive...all because they like Apple...

eg the oldy of: "everyone in the video industry uses Apple, so therefore it is the best"

that is plainly irrational isn't it...

I honestly think that Apple is pretty good in some areas, they're business model just seems so myopic and retarded...makes me suspect a conspiracy with Microsoft or something...smart engineers crap business model...doesnt quite add up does it?

Anyway, more grist for the mill

I've never had problems with either, but AMD because it's cheaper.
