The secret of Dual-Layer DVD's?

Ok, just bought a blazing 16X NEC dual-layer DVD burner from newegg, but... I have nothing to burn! I can't find any sort of dual-layer discs in the local area, and it appears they are about $7 a piece online. Is there some secret to hunting down these elusive DVD-R DL discs at bargain prices (ie $3 or less per disc)? I don't know, maybe I'm jumping the gun on this whole dual-layer thing. Or maybe I haven't discovered the secret grove of illegal full-quality DVDs yet...

Later Days

Nope, cheapest I've seen is $30 for a 5 pack. It's just a waiting game now until the media goes down in price.

I've heard that these disks cannot be played in existing home DVD players.

Not until the new format is coded into the firmware of the new players.

Has anyone successfully burned one of these and played it in a DVD player? Which DVD players will play these things?

Still, the disks would be useful for backups or drive imaging...

I'l wait until the media is affordable (and useable).

I just bought the same burner. Burned one movie on a 4.7gb disc and it played fine in my $99 Sanyo DVD player. [+R Verbatim disc] Haven't tried the dual layer discs yet. To much $$.

All DVD players "should" play the disks. They are supposed to be compatable with the standard DVD format that comercial DVD's come in. I wouldn't doubt there are incompatabilities, but that would be the media's fault(brand, quality). They are supposed to work in any standard DVD player just like a regular DVD.

I'm sure they'll play in DVD players, I haven't had any trouble with DVD-R's before. I think I'll just save the dual-layer discs for movies I really want in high quality, like LOTR or the Matrix... and then the others will be just fine on single-layer media. I mean, come on, you can't beat $.25 a DVD! (50pk for $20)
