HP does some strange things. A friend's Pavillion 520N showed evidence of a virus. I suggested that he run the system recovery disk to restore the computer to the factory settings.

He said that Best Buy never gave him a recovery disk. He was right.

HP uses a hidden partition on the drive to hold the recovery data. You have to run HP tools (from Windows) to initiate the recovery process.

There is a way to create a recovery disk, but you need Windows to do this. A user unfamiliar with HP isn't going to create a recovery disk if he doesn't need one. If he does need one, he won't be able to create it!

Your best bet would be to find someone with the same system who can create the recovery disk for you. You can also order one from HP.

If I understand you correctly, you're using a plain vanilla XP installation disk?

The problem you're having with XP is this:

Your BIOS is set to boot from CD.
The XP installation starts, writes to the hard drive drive, then reboots.
Your BIOS is still set to boot from CD.
You can interrupt the first reboot, go to your BIOS settings, and select your hard drive as the first boot device. The hard drive should boot, and finish the installation.

You'd be better off with the recovery disk, as it contains the drivers needed by your hardware. XP alone may not recognize the hardware.

If you havent got as far as running installation from the xp cd your recovery partition may still be intact and to access it from boot up you do not need windows all you need to do is start tapping F10 as soon as you turn the computer on this will boot the computer into the recovery partition where there in a non destructive recovery option which backs up user data if its not already corrupted, if this fails then there is a destructive option which wipes the hdd and reinstalls windows and all the pre installed software.
Of course this all depends on if the no emulation error will allow the recovery to run.
