Frequency over range?

No problems found, according to the local trouble shooters, but when I boot up I get a 'frequency over range' little blue box in the center of the screen.

A week later the problem goes away for several days, then starts again. I can't even get booted up successfully with this problem when it is happening.

A friend thinks I'm not getting a steady flow of current and that is causing the problem. Is that possible? Anyone else have a clue?

I'll try a wild guess...

Is this a monitor problem? It sounds like the graphics card is outputting a signal that the monitor can't handle.

If there are any socketed chips on the graphics card, make sure that the chips are seated in the sockets. Expansion and contraction of the graphics chips can cause the chips to 'creep' out of the sockets.

Make sure that the graphics card is firmly seated in the slot on the motherboard.

Check the cable connection from the graphics card to the monitor.

Personally, I'd try a different graphics card before trying another monitor, to avoid damage.

Also have your local troubleshooters check the power supply. A failing power supply can cause all kinds of weird problems.

Make sure the monitor is turned on before the computer so the graphics card can autodetect it. I get those symptoms if I turn the computer on first on one of my older systems.

What resolution and frequency is your desktop set to? Are those settings close to the speced limits of the monitor? When this is happening, do you see the early part of the boot sequence (bios text and low-rez boot images) or does it blank before you get to a high-rez screen? When you have trouble, is the room unusually cold or hot or humid?
