Non working mobo/cpu

I would like to throw this out to everyone. I have 2mobo's/2 cpu's that are non working. Since I'm out of work, I can't afford to take both to a local shop for them to check to see if it's the board or the cpu. Is there a long time standing member at this forum that can check my boards and cpu for me at no charge. I'll pay for shipping to and from. Here is a list of the board/cpu:

gateway jabil board w/slot 1 pent. 500mhz

shuttle ak31v3.1 board w/ duron 1.0ghz

Any assistance on this is much appreciated.

can you give us any more detailed information on what happens when you try to boot either system?

Neither boards will post. I have tried resetting the boards, unplugging all disk and optical drives and still the board won't post.

try seeing if removing the ram and cpu from either board, then powering it on gives you any beep codes. at least then you'll know if the board is trying to post, just make sure your pc speaker is plugged in. you might figure out one has a bad power supply as well, and at least you cqan cross canibalize the parts to figure that out.

see if you can just get a beep code from the boards by powering them up with no RAM or CPU in them. if you can't get a single beep out of them with any combintation of no RAM, no CPU or neither of them, then it is likely that both boards are dead.

one thing to check, is your CPU fan even comming on? is there any indication that power is comming to the board? if not, then you may just have a power supply problem, which would be much easier (cheaper) to fix.

Just a thought, have you checked for blown capacitors? That's a not-infrequent cause of mainboard death, but is easily repairable. I've resurrected several boards by simply replacing the bad caps...

A dead CMOS battery would just cause you to lose your CMOS settings everytime the PC lost power.

S+H would be about $20 each way for both boards/cpus more than likely. If you don't get any takers soon, feel free to send them my way. I think I've averaged about $9 for each one I've sent out using USPS 2-Day w/ Delivery Confirmation.

I just sent you an e-mail regarding something else, maybe we can work out a deal.

Evil Rick had give the suggestion of the caps but another friend said to try the cmos battery. I had looked at the caps and didn't see anything wrong. Would a dead cmos battery cause the board not to function? How long do the batterys usually last on a board?

in the event that there is a setting in BIOS that causes your machine to not boot, there is a very slim chance that the setting exists in the failsafe default settings that the board would revert to upon loss of battery power. this is definitely not a battery problem, and the simplest possible problem that would cause your board not to boot would be having the power switch headder plugged into the wrong pins, provided the power supply is plugged in and set to 110V and not 240V.

there is the very off chance that your board requires a manual jumper setting for the system bus, that would be a simple fix to double check. anything beyond that would likely be bad hardware.
