Chances are your drive is dead. CD ROMS as a general rule do not need any type of driver installed and should work in any computer they are put in. Check the cables first. try exchanging them. If it doesn't work you might think about a new one.

sounds like a virus, i have seen that on more than one occasion, really wierd cd rom issues. one drive works, another doesn't. i think it's one of the bugbear or sasser varients that does it. check your virus definitions and do a full system scan. you were probably lucky and restored back to a point before the virus infected your system.

and if it's not a virus, it's either really freaky, or some other IDE utility or maybe a via miniport driver (on the off chance you have a via chipset) that messed up your atapi devices on the ide chain.

I have experienced the same problem after installing SP-2. When I have restored the machine to a preinstallation date, everything appears to be operating OK. I can read CDs written on any ohter drive but am unable to write to a CD. The problem appears to be a compatibility issue between the driver and SP-2. Does anybody know where/how someone can get an updated driver which is compatible with SP-2? Again, the CD ROM in question is the Lite-On LTR -24102M.
