You can connect the two together using a single crossover cable.

You can connect the two with two straight cables and a switch(or hub).

You can connect the switch or hub to your router to get DHCP and surf the net etc..

A second cable to the router is your best bet but I would go with a switch if that's not an option. A crossover cable will let the 2 computers see each other but nothing else. Good luck

LAN without a router?

I just got a new notebook and a new desktop (early graduation present) and I wanted to setup a LAN between the two of them so that I could do some multiplayer gaming but I did not realize that a router is needed to do this
I have a router however it is located at the end of about 100 feet of ethernet cable
I wanted to just run another router off of the line I have running into my bedroom to branch it off into 2 lines and hook it up to both computers but my father will not allow me to do this (only god knows why)
so this is why I am here

I need to know if there is a way to set up a LAN connection between both computers without using a router and also without running a second line all the way to my router

I thought it was possible to directly connect both together with an ethernet cable but it looks like I was wrong

A "crossover cable" is simply a CAT 5 ethernet cable with one end wired different then standard. You can connect the 2 machines and share internet using a crossover cable and the ICS [internet connection sharing] feature in Windows as long as both machines have an available network card.

the simple description of a crossover cable is a network cable used to connect "like" devices together. so, a computer to a computer, a switch to a switch, etc. where you use a patch cable to connect a computer to a switch, a crossover cable will not work (usually).
