DVD-rom and CD-RW drive dead

I have a VPR Matrix 180r computer and its still just like it was when I got it. Except for two small problems. My dvd drive thinks it is now a cd-rom drive and my CD-RW will no longer burn cd's and it also thinks its a cd-rom drive. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is wrong or what I should do to fix the problem. its rather frustrating... Thanks.

are you running any anti virus software, and if so, are the definitions updated? i saw this exact problem alot, and it ended up being a virus causing it. there is the chance that one of the drives died and is causing this, however the exact symptoms you described are virus/spyware related in my experience.

Yes I have norton and I've updated the definitions... do you happen to know the name of the virus so I can download that specific definition? Thanks for the tip though.

unfortunately no, but bugbear comes to mind. try running the housecall online virus scan, at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

that might be able to find something if for some reason a virus was able to get around your pc's AV client.
