Video Card Temp

When playing Max Payne on XP which is a task in itself since the game doesn't support XP, what should my video card temp be? It keeps popping up w/ an error if too many things happen at once. I run my systems w/o the side of the case on, don't ask me why just old habbit, but after shutting the computer off the heat sync on the video card is to hot to even touch. Any ideas?

Athlon AMD XP 1900 1.6ghz
512 RAM
NVidia Geforce 4 mx 440 PCI
Windows XP w/ SP2

Keep your case closed so the you have better air flow. And to the answer to your question: I don't know how hot video cards should be, but I would guess NOT burning hot.

actually, the heat sinc on video cards are usually burning hot to the touch, since the normal idle operating temperature for a graphics processor is usually nearly 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

i have never had a problem with max payne running on windows XP, so i'm curious as to what problems you had getting it to run int he first place?

also, what is the error it gives you? this could be a problem with software, maybe a game update needed or somehting with windows (directx and such)

i would like to 3rd the motion that you put the case cover back on your machine, but you may want to make sure that there are no obstructions with any of the case fans (clogged filters for example). if you have no case fans, definitely invest in at least one, they are cheap.

Installed Direct X, the patch everything. Still does it, pops up as Do you want to send error report to Microsoft.

AppName: MaxPayne.exe AppVer: 1.0.4.0 ModName: e2mfc.dll

this is definitely an error with the game, as that file is one that is part of the game and not a windows component.

have you tried changing sound settings in the game options? you also might want to change your video resolution/color depth to see if that helps any. from what i found online it looks like it is not isolated to any particular video card. you could try re-installing the game as well. if this is an original CD you laso might want to check it for scratches, though that is a long shot since it probablywould have given you another error during install.

you might want to update your video card, chipset and sound card drivers as well.

tried making the resolution bigger still did it, updated everything 2 weeks ago when i installed SP2. The game is an original that a friend let me borrow to play. No scratches, ran fine on his machine. Turned everything from High to Med still did it, don't really want to play the game on low.

well, after hearing that info, i'm leaning towards the possibility of xpsp2 causing the problem. did you have any problems with playing the game before installing xpsp2? if it started after installing xpsp2, then the fix is to reinstall the game. that should work, as i have seen some really wierd behaviour with some programs after installing xpsp2 on a machine that had been running fine for months before that, and reinstalling the programs after that has always fixed those problems.
