Amd Sempron VS Amd Athlon Xp

I am going to be purchasing an new system (home built of course) and wanted to go cheap yet not too cheap. And I was comparing the Semprons to the Athlons Xp's , essentally i saw no differance same L2 cache and FSB , besides semprons having a slow clock speed. But I thought hey i can overclock a sempron to a athlon xp , and save cash to boot. But is there a huge differance besides what i already pionted out?

Thanx

What price and performance level are you looking for. What will you be using this computer for?

Semprons do overclock very well. The 2200+ OC's to 2.0Ghz on stock cooling without problems for everyone I've seen post. I would guess they could be pushed further.

One thing to remember , is the fact that Sempron's rating scheme is not the same as Athlon XP, they are supposed to be about equal to the new Celeron D's ratings in Mhz. In reality they are even better than that though.

By far the best price/performance CPU out there is the Sempron 3100+. When overclocked to 2.5Ghz it outperforms a P4 3.4Ghz by and average of 5%. Of course it is also socket 754 and an Nforce3 250GB chipset so that has to be taken into consideration, but the cooling they were using was subpar for overclocking. It is really quite impressive.

Not a board I would recommend getting, but it should overclock all the same. I would highly urge you to go for a motherboard with the Nforce 2 chipset if you want to overclock. And that isn't even a universal recommendation as there are some boards that do better than others.

I am purchasing a Amd sempron 2400+ and i'm a gamer and i love also downloading and listening to mp3's.Also i am buying pc 2700 ram so i can push my fsb from 333 mhz to 400 mhz.And the case has 6 , 80mm case fans so i will have a good basis for a overclocking rig.
PC2700 ram is rated at 333Mhz effectively meaning it would not be a good choice for OCing to 400FSB. PC3200(400Mhz) ram isn't any more expensive and is a much better choice.

If you are seriously building something to game on, the socket A sempron line is not the place to start. A Mobile Barton core 2400 or 2200+ would be the best choice paired with a decent Heatsink. 6 fans won't do much without a good heatsink.

Sorry my bad i meant pc3200 ram , and i am getting this system cheap not high performance yet.Jus fast enuff to run a few good games but saving the pennies for a awesome performing comp later.I was gonna get a 64 bit system running in a few months (like 6-8 months)but my current system is old and slow.So i am buying a budget system to maybe sell to a student or a gramma.

Thats what i am counting on and don't plan to go extreme with my overclocking, maybe 1.8 ghz from 1.67ghz.

i am running a 2400 Sempron overclocked to 2.0 Ghz (166 FSB to 200 FSB) the Sempron 2400 has a X10 multiplier.... I am also running a stock HSF, runs about 30C idle in a LAN small ATX case... with one rear fan and one intake side fan and one intake front fan...

i love this cpu...runs very well.. at load for games it gets into the 40's...still not bad temps ...
