No sound windows 2000

A few months ago I had 2 operating systems (win 98/win2000) installed on 2 different drives. Sound worked fine on Win 98 the original operating system but never in Windows 2000. I reformatted and installed only windows 2000..since then there has been no aduio. It may be a hardware conflict RE: 2 devices require the same resource. OKay now that I understand that how do I resolove it. I Check Admin Tools >services > Windows Audio is enabled." I couldn't find a folder or option that said 'services,' there is a 'service pack folder,' and nothing that says windows audio.
Am I looking in the wrong place?

Then in Under direct sound >System Tools> Tools > DirectXDiag the sound diagnostic says "No sound card was found...if one was expected you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."

So I'm back to "Device Manager/Sound video game controlers," but it will not allow me to delete..does anyone know how I can do this to see if on a reboot win 2000 will pick up the sound card?

I highlight and right click..but there is no option to delete anywhere that I can find. Or am I doing it wrong..am I supposed to double click every thing under "Sound video game controlers," Do I double click on "audio codecs, etc." "properties: and delete everything under that? Which is a lot of stuff.

As well under Under add/remove hardware
Something called "Crystal WDM Gameport" with a volume icon besides it..should I uninstall this or remove this?

Thanks

Drivers?

Have you looked for and installed W2K drivers for the audio card?
This is typical for an upgrade of the OS.
I'll check back with youy tonight.

Hi Sevenal & Backyard,

Thanks much for responding...sorry I was out of touch for so long.
I Still have the problem.,,it's been soundless since I switched over to Windows 2000 in mid summer :O( no fun. I just can't seem to get it going. I'm thinking it's one of 2 problems 1: the soundcard is not being picked up because of a hardware conflict or 2: I haven't installed the drivers properly.

Since I'm fairly new at all this setting up stuff..I have a few basic questions if one of you would be so kind to answer.

1: Does an onboard soundcard mean it's in the motherboard. What is the difference between a PCI and ISA soundcard. I ask because I opened up my tower and could not find a sound card in any slot.

2: Is the motherboard the hard drive?

3: I had to install a new hard dive (Western Digital) when I was using Windows 98...sound worked fine then, would it also work fine in Windows 2000?

4: Is there an easy way to uninstall all the audio stuff and reinstall them so windows 2000 can detect it?

5: I'm not sure how to install drivers. I have downlaoded all the drivers I could find for my soundcard...however when I go to open the one I need with winzip it says it cannot be opened properly. Even after I reinstall them they don't open.

In control panel/soundsandmultimedia/sounds the place where I'm supposed to enable the sound with a checkmark is greyed out and will not allow me to put a checkmard in the appropriate box. Same thing under 'audio.'

How do I go about installing new drivers for the soundcard..like where do I look..must I delte the other drivers, etc.

These are my pc specs:
Intel® Pentium® III 600MHz (w/256KB L2 Cache) Slot 1 CPU
197 MB SyncDRAM (up to 256 MB)
nVidia RIVA TNT2 Vanta 2x AGP with 8MB SDRAM
Crystal CS4280 3D PCI Audio
8x Max. Sony DVD-ROM Drive with Software Decoder
20GB HDD (Ultra DMA EIDE) Changed to Western Digital
3.5" 1.44MB FDD
56K ITU V.90 PCI Fax/Modem
PS/2 Internet Keyboard/Mouse
Stereo Speakers
2 USB Ports (1 is on Front)
1 Serial / 1 Parallel / 3 Expansion Slot
Audio In & Out / Game Port on Front
Internet Ready
Microsoft® Windows® '98 Second Edition changed to Windows 98

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have,
Mary

?'s
1. onboard does mean it is on the motherboard
2.no the motherboard is the main system board and the hard drive is used for operating system(OS) and storage.
3. hard drive will have nothing to do with the sound not working
4. you can go into device manager and remove the sound devices and reboot and windows should redetect the devices
5. you may have had a corupt download of the drivers.

Is this on a prebuilt system such as HP, compaq, dell or is it a home built system. If it is pre built give us the make and model or home built we will need the motherboard model either by looking for it on the motherboard or using some software to id it, we can help find what drivers you need to get some sound on that system.

everesthome should be able to ID the motherboard so we can find the correct drivers.

ok

Do you have the driver disk that came with the mother board?
it may not be compatible with w2k

also a pci audio card is just a few bucks

pci = short white slots

isa = long black backward compatible slots"old school"

And no I never got a driver disk with the motherboard...and the original installation disk Windows 98 SE is not working..that's why I went to Windows 2000.

There are several things under "Sound, video and game controllers." There is Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers is there twice, Legacy Video Capture devices, Media Control devices and Vidoe Codecs. Do I just delete the stuff under Audio Codecs which it won't allow me to do anyway or do I delete the things under Legacy Audio Drivers? With the 2 Legacy Audio Drivers there are different things under properties in each one. The first one says the driver is working properly and I see nothing I can delete. Under properties in the second Legacy Audio Driver there is Audio Devices, MIDI Devices and Instruments, Line Input devices and , Mixer devices. I've tried deleting everything uder all those and it won't allow me too either. Very confusing.

I also just noticed and exclamation mark in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers besides the Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel. There are 2 versions of each and the ! mark is beside one of each.

And under Universal Serial Bus Controllers there is and exclamation device next to a USB Device. When I right click it and click on 'scan for hardware changes' nothing happens. When I right click on properties under it and ask it to reinstall the driver it says it fiound a better one then was previously installed. But when I say ok to install it..it comes back the driver could not be installed. Should I disable or uninstall this USB Device?

Wow I'm in a mess aren't I. A rhetorical question

As for the drivers I've tried installing and reinstalling them many times.. I may be doing the whole process wrong..is there a step by step guide toinstalling driversproperly that eithr of you may know of?

Thanks again..both of you.
Mary
