HELP!! Computer long beep on start up - please read!

Ok I ran into a major issue here. I have a P4 1.6 GHZ with a Asus P4S800 mobo.

I put in a new stick or 512 DDR ram to replace my old 256 stick. I then booted up and it went into the BIOS automaticly and set the ram to 512. I then saved and restarted and then pooof...I see black smoke and my ram stinks. I power off and pull the ram to see 2 gold boxes have turned black.

I then put my old 256 RAM back in and start up again, it sends me into the bios again and when I quit BIOS I get a long beeeeeep and a black screen.

There is still power and the fans are working when I boot and I can enter the BIOS. Can anyone help me as to what it is? I am sure it's either the MOBO or CPU but how to I know for sure.

Thanks,

It sounds like your mobo fried, unfortunately. You might want to try to put your 256mb stick into another ram slot, but if you saw smoke, it could have only been caused by the motherboard (and that is not good). Fortunately for you, mobos and ram are rather cheap to replace. I recommend Newegg.
