Pentium 2 problem with hd

Hi
I was building a p2 for my brother everytjing worked alright I can boot up, set bios the memory are all working, video card sound card all ok But i tried to install the hd and the computer does not recognize it. In the first screen when its trying to get the primary master it locks up and stays there forever the hard drive is a maxtor 60gb and its working perfectly my friend gave it to me and he told it was working I tried all jumper settings, tried changing the IDE cable, tried resetting the bios and still stuck
ANY IDEAS?
THANKS

Have you tried it using no jumper and put it on the first IDE chanel on the end of the cable. If it is the only drive on the ribon it should detect as primary master. If you have a cd rom put it on the second IDE chanel as master.

Maybe the board does not support a 60GB HDD.

What model board is it? You might need a BIOS upgrade or use a PCI IDE Controller.

it's the motherboard, i can't even use the 40gb maxtor on my p2, the ata66 started in i think the late P3 boards.

No, I don't think it's the motherboard. I had an 80 gig HD in my PII 350 and it works just fine. Make sure that the jumper setting is correct and if that doesn't work, you might need to partition the drive before it'll let you install.

It doesnt matter about the CPU speed, it matters about the mobo, it might take the CPU and not the HD.

Ive got one that has a PIII 933 in it and it will not take anything over 60GB. Can see how a mobo with a PII would choke on accepting a 60GB.

I encountered a similar problem last week, on two computers actually. I solved one of them by updating the BIOS, and the other by choosing the "LBA" mode in the BIOS.

My ancient Packard Bell PB680 motherboard (with P200 CPU) can recognize 60GB EIDE hard drives, so I am sure yours can do it too.

Hmmm i got a p3 board that doesn't like 60 gigs but loves 80 gigs.
Try to find a hard drive controller card , also ther are programs out there that might help. But a p2 board is old and if it is a intel slot 1 board like say an SE440BX then maybe go for a differant board

Knowing what model board it is would be very helpful.

If there's a BIOS upgrade to fix it we can help you locate it.
