NTLDR error

WHen installing XP Home edition to a system with a a7v8x-x MB
400mhz DDR with a Athlon XP 2600 333FSB
I receive NTfs.sys error when installing with CD
When trying to format drive to NTFS, it stops part way and display error?
I can install and run win98se. Connect to the net and apply all updates to windows with no problems. Using all of the above hardware.

And when I swap the cpu to a 700mhz duron with 2100 ddr

All is good and great with the XP home edition install????

Help if you can....

Is it original Windows media or a copy?

Have you tried the HDD diagnostic software?

Yep it is the Original OEM of XP home Ed.

I was able to swap out the cpu and ram and then the install worked.

I read that I cannot run athlon xp 2600 with 333fsb with ram at 400mhz.

But can you underclock 400mhz DDR down to 333mhz?

Will that cause problems with Win XP w/service pack 2 install

But then be fine with win98se????

I think I am just going to take the ram back and have it tested and exchanged for 333mhz

Running it at 333MHz FSB should be fine. It's just not running full speed. I'd keep it and that allows you to be able to get a 400MHz FSB CPU in the future.

The only problem would be if you tried to run the CPU at 400MHz and it was only rated at 333MHz. That's what you call "overclocking".

Thanks for the Help,

I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Cpu was set wrong in bios.

I have an athlon 2600 and 400mhz ddr

I set the settings in the bios of my a7v8x-x

Cpu speed - Manual
Cpu Freg multi - 12.5
Cpu Freq - 166/33

After making the changes my sytem boots right into winxp home ed with no problems.

Still not sure why an install of win98se would run fine with the incorrect settings.
