Why is the Hard Drive making scratching sounds ?

I recently discover that my hard drive is making these scratching sound on the metal plate or something when I just finish install norton Internet Security 2005 and everything just freezes so I decide to push restart on the PC and the sound gets loudy by the minute and it just freezes everything.. I turn off the PC and when I turn it back on the bios doesn't detect my Hard drive anymore and it just keep on making the Metalic sound. Anyone have any Ideal on what is going on ?

Your drive is probably done-for. Turning the computer on and off was probably not a good move.

If you can get it recognised, I'd suggest trying to run the manufacturer's diagnostics on it, although they'll probably just tell us what we already know.

Yea, I agree with sechs. Your hard drive is dead, get a new one and put it in. There is no hope of retrieving the data from it unless you want to send it off to professionals, or hook it up to your new harddrive as slave, and try to get the data off it. BUt keep in mind, this will risk freezing your comp, which will force you to turn the power off, and damage your new hard drive.

A temporary fix is to put your hard drive in the freezer, yes, the freezer. This could help just long enough for you to get the data needed off. I would wait until you get another hard drive and hook up the old drive as a slave. This may or may not work...all I can say is, best of luck.

Here's a story about it:
