Help with Remote Desktop

I am trying to set up Remote deskyop for a local entity. The machines we are trying to hook up to are running XP Pro and XP Home. We con enable the machines for RD but can't figure out how to access them from outside our Lan. We have a DSL connection to the Internet and connects to a Network Anywhere router which sets the Lan side IP addresses. We would like to allow our users to connect from home if they wish. How can this be accomplished using what we have? If any other information is needed please let me know.

Paul

I cant answer your question for sure as I am trying to do this myself.

You will have to do some research on VPN as that is most likely how you will tunnel in.

You will have to have the router forward requests to the computer in question as well, that can be done when you configure the VPN.

You will have to get a program that will get your REAL IP address, the one given to you by the phone company, as well and check it every day. Mine seems to stay the same on DSL for 2 to 3 days before they issue a new one but ive seen it last a week.

These are suggestions and are as far as I have gotten. Once you figure it out im sure that there is not much to it.

I can get my IP from the modem and I know already how to foward as well as give each computer its own port to work with. I don't know how to get past the modem to the lan, it may just be a setting I need to change.

Thats where the VPN would come in as far as I know. I have read a bit about it but not enough to advise anyone.

Quote:
Using the WAN Setup page, you can set up a Default DMZ Server and allow the router to respond to a 'ping' from the internet. Both of these options have security issues, so use them carefully.

Specifying a Default DMZ Server allows you to set up a computer or server that is available to anyone on the Internet for services that you haven't defined. There are security issues with doing this, so only do this if you're willing to risk open access. If you do not assign a Default DMZ Server, the router discards any undefined service request.
Pulled that off my Netgear router setup page. Maybe something like that would be a way to go.
