Kids dell inspiron 8000 dvd not responding

Inspiron 8000 dvd not responding
When I put a disk of any kind audio/video/or data the drive does not respond. When I ask My Computer what is on the drive it tells me to put a disk in the tray, when there is one there all ready. I've put the firm ware fixes in and that stuff ... come on Dell ... they won't help, and I need yours now. Please respond if you've had a simular problem with your dell.
Thanks,
Wildbull

if it's windows xp, check in device manager that all your ide controllers are set to "DMA if available". sometimes when something is set to PIO mode, optical drives dissapear or just don't work properly.
