well, the thing about windows and internet explorer.... internet explorer is so deeply tied into the explorer shell that often times a problem with IE means a problem with explorer in general. with 98 and Me, you have one choice of running the internet explorer repair tool, and if that doesn't work, re-install windows.
i know re-installing is the last thing you want to do, you always want to try and fix the problem. however, i have seen internet explorer issues chassed for weeks with absolutely no progress. and that's just normal patch glitches and software conflicts. these days with spyware, i always cringe when i boot up someone's computer and it's taking over a minute to load the desktop completely on a 2.5+ Ghz pentium 4 machine. you know you will open internet explorer and it will have at least 2 third party tool bars or something along those lines.
all i can say is that you explain to the customer how many problems internet explorer can have that relate to big windows problems, the time it can take just to figure out what the problem is, and then how long the fix can take. let them realize the bigger problem that internet explorer can cause (tactfully of course, without letting the customer know that they are the one causing all their own problems, usually). let them finally ask "well, is there something else that we can do?"
it is quite possible putting things in perspective for them might let them think about browser alternatives. mentioning the latest big windows vulnerabilities lie in IE might help too.
hopefully the font thing works. there's a chance there is some kind of malware problem as well. hijack this! is a good little utility with a web bassed search for your exact problem, eliminating the need for definition style software installed on your computer, with an online database updated faster than new software can be issued.
