My Compaq laptop takes 15 mins to boot xp then still runs a little slow but never crashes. I can open a couple of programs and cruise the net for about 10 mins, and it slowly it becomes blazing fast and can run it all night, putting my pc to shame. It originally had ME and worked fine. Happened after a fresh install of xp home.
Any Ideas??

Thanks for your reply,
I just did a quick format. I tried turning off the services in msconfig and it worked fine. any list on what services are needed?? also remember there was a second petition originally used as a virt drive?? this thing is driving me crazy. also noticed it does slow down again when installing programs.

for the boot issue, you might want to try the "bootvis" utility. that'll give you a nice picture as to what is taking so long.

my guess is it's unnecessary services loading on startup. the sight tweakxp has a nice little list of services you can set to not start with boot up for a "gamming" machine. in your case, with a laptop, i'm fairly certain your requirements aren't much different from the so called "gaming" configuration. in all reality, unless you're hosting some kind of network service or using UPnP, that configuration should work great for anyone.
