my modem its drivimg me crazy

Ok my problem its that my internet connections are always TOO slow.. I have had MSN, Supra (local telephone company) and AOL (all dial-up), and i think i have never reached a speed of higher than 28.8 kbps. according to my modems papers it is a 56.6kbps modem, but i have never gove on at that speed. Also i have another computer in my house that has connected to the same IPS and it always goes at 48.8 or 46 or higer but never this slow. So im coming to think my modem its very slow.

Now the tricky thing is that once i tried switching the modems between my pc's, so i got the other modem and put it in this one, and guess what, it went online at 28.8kbps everytime. So im coming to a conclusion that maybe the problem its not the modem but more like the pc. Can anybody tell me if there is like an option in windows XP Home that makes the internet connections slow or something. I think i will try anything anybody tells me..

Thanks in advance,
Carlos

It might just be in the phone line or the cord your using to connect the modem to the phone line. Have you tried moving the cord to another box or tried a new patch cord?

I have the same exact issues with 2 diff phone lines. One will connect at @32k the other connects at 46k-52k and I found its just a bad connection in the lines.

on occasion modem initialization strings will help force a dial up connection to connect at the correct speed if it is in fact a configuation issue. you should be able to find a list easily online, especially if you check your provider's support web site.

but i hate to say it, RicheemxX is probably right, bad lines are most likely the problem. i had a friend who even had to go outside to his telephone junction box with a hair dryer every morning when the moisture in the air settled all over everything, including the power and phone lines. he would connect at 14.4 with wet lines, and then 48.8 after he blow dried them!
