Computer stops responding at desktop

Hi,

Whenever I try to start windows, I get all the way to the desktop. Upon reaching the desktop, I see the toolbar at the bottom, with no icons at the bottom right, or anything loading, and then I get an "Explorer" window that pops up, where there "has been an illegal operation in blah blah and the program must now shut down" or whatever.

I've tryed to restore an old back-up, and it doesn't help at all.

Any suggestions, please feel free to post them!

Thanks,
Alex

Between the point where you see the BIOS splash screen and windows first starts to load, hold down F8 and see if you can get into safe mode. Will pop up a list of options, safe mode will be one of them.

If you get into safe mode got to start, run and type in "msconfig". Click on the startup tab and post what is listed or just uncheck anything that looks suspicious.

Something is loading at startup thats corrupted or just plain nasty, sounds like.

Tried looking for any suspicious programs running at startup, even tried making it so nothing started on startup, still getting the error.

When I get to the desktop and get the error, if I click details it says:

"EXPLORER caused an exception c0000006H in module
WININET.DLL at 0177:6301a4d2" then all the digits after that.

This problem started occurring last night when I was playing a game, and I tried to go on the internet... I went to my email address to try tocheck my mail, and it wouldn't load... so I closed Internet Explorer and tried again, and again, and again... then I finally restarted my computer thinking that would fix the problem and I got, instead of the Explorer error, an error that was "Spscc" or something... At that point I restarted the computer again, to see if it was a bad start-up, and I still got the error... so I did "command prompt only" after I restarted (In F8 menu) and restored an old registry... at that point, I restarted my computer once again, and I started receiving the "Explorer" error.

Even when I startup in SAFE MODE I get the "Explorer" error, and when I hit close, it gives me the dialog box that says "Safe mode is a mode in which blah blah blah", every time I hit close...
I have tried the following thus far:

1.) Running a registry fixer

2.) Running AVG Virus Scanner to check for viruses, there was 1, deleted it. (Still wont work after)

3.) "Halving" (Using msconfig to run 1/2 of settings, checking to see if it works, then trying the other 1/2... neither worked.)

4.) Tried running NO startup programs

Please help!
Alex

at this point, if you can get to the repair console command line from the windows cd, run a chkdsk /r

if that's all good, install and run both spybot and adaware se.

after that, go to trendmicro's site and run their online virus scanner.

if all that looks good and you still have the problem, try downloading and running mem-test. it's a bootable cd or floppy that runs a series of tests on your memory to see if it's working alright.

this should give you a good idea whee you stand.

you say you tried to do a restore off an old backup...but that did not help. Um, I assume the computer was functioning properly when you made the backup, so this indicates a possible hardware issue.

Hardware does sometimes deteriorate, so you may need to consider that.

Have you recently added new hardware (eg wireless card) that you had initial difficulties with?

===

As mentioned by others, running repair off the WinXP CD should help. If it doesn't you may need to reinstall windows again.

If windows is installed again and it craps out...then that may indicate a hardware issue.
