this is probaly not the problem at all but, I had a copy of xp once that had a teenie weenie scratch on it and it couldn't find like 3 files on the install, kinda sucked, i had to try a few times to get it to work. And also, you said that it was a upgrade cd or whole install?

The missing or cannot find hal.dll, \windows\system32\hal.dll, or \winnt\system32\hal.dll error message may be experienced on a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP system when the boot.ini becomes corrupted or when a user is attempting to dual boot a computer.

As I recall Windows ME has some sort of dual partiton thing going on with it. I had num, erous problems with a clients computer when I tried to upgrade it. The above is from google search on the problem. If you do the asearch, there is also a place to download that dll file.

Good luck

Tim

I had the same problem as Needalittleinfo when I installed XP Pro on this comp. After a few attempts I managed to get it installed.

With my Wifes Comp, it was a different story. She had Win ME and after 2 days of trying to install and getting error after error, I did a low level format, wiped the drive clean, and started over. After repartitioning the Hard Drive, XP Pro installed first times.
