Lemon question

Is anyone familiar enough with the PC-manufacturing process to tell me what is the failure rate? In other words, what percentage of PC's sold have a defective component or are assembled incorrectly? I realize that the failure rate may vary by manufacturer; a range would do.

I remember reading an article on the web a year or so ago and Compaq had a 1.344% failure rate. I believe they had a specific issue or sumthing though. Thats why the article came out.

You wouldnt see that much on the subject...i mean...it might be really bad.

I know for instance that a Taiwanese capacitor maker was implicated in the theft of a Japanese capacitor design. As it turned out they stuffed up and didnt make it properly and this led to massive capacitor failure rates across many of the mobos (eg Epox, Matsonic, ECS, Abit etc etc). To the point that Abit particularly issued a statement saying that they would repair all returned boards afflicted by the problem and that they were switching to the higher quality Japanese models from now on.

But that is generally not discussed or widely known...for obvious reasons.

More info

Thanks for the replies

The following doesn't quite address my question but others might find it interesting anyway:

"In a January 2001 survey, PC World found that almost one out of eleven respondents bought computers that did not work upon first use. Of the 13.6 million desktop PCs sold in 2002, Consumer Reports found that about 1.9 million of them had serious problems within the first month of ownership; an estimated 544,000 of them were inoperable when buyers started the machines; and approximately 150,000 were lemons. This means that almost fifteen percent of computer purchasers in 1999 had to return and/or repair a new computer."

That is huge isnt it

Yeah, thanks for posting that quote...

That is why computer shops need to try and resist the trend to cheap crap as much as possible...and test all new computers thoroughly (doesnt account for damage in transit though)

Anyway
