How do i set up a network?

I know it may sound retarded but i cant for the life of me get it to work. Im use XP Pro on both machines (one laptop one desktop) and i cant get it to work at all and im about to flip out lol.

Is there a way ican reset the network and file sharing stuff back to there defualt settings so i can just start over?

All the help i can get will be very very appreciated

Have you at any time previously had the two connected? What sort of equipment are you using, straight through or through a hub?

XP pro will be a little harder if its your first time with pros firewall and all.

Make sure they are in the same workgroup first. Make sure the drives are indeed shared. Make sure the same user name and password is setup on both machines ( not absolutely necessary but makes it easier).

Poke around the following site a little bit, it can help you more than i can for sure.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

This is a link to a short explanation on that site with another link in it.

Good luck, just keep plugging at it.

On most ADSL routers you have a feature called DHCP.

You need to enable this. Then in network connection panel of each machine, right click and select TCP/IP from the list and make sure that you have obtain addresses and DNS automatically.

If the machines are connected to the integrated switch on the router...then the machines should automatically be on the same subnet and will be ready to talk.

You may need to fiddle around a bit if that does not work first time...press the run button on the start menu.

Type: cmd
Then: ipconfig /all
Have a look and see if the addresses in there are in the same range as the router's. If not do this:
Type: ipconfig /release all
this should work for a sec and then come to the prompt again.
Type: ipconfig /renew all
it will work for a sec...
Type: ipconfig /all
This last one should show you the router's range...if it does it means that the router has successfully configured your client computers on the same network. You should also get internet from this.

Hope that helps a bit

That doesnt look to bad....thr router address looks ok (default gateway for you is router, industry default is to always have the routers as xxx.xxx.xxx.1)

I see you have the ISPs DNS server addresses patched in manually. This is how I have had to do it too...I am working on a gateway solution.

However, I only need to do it because I also run a Windows 2000 Server and there is a known issue and I use that server instead of the router for DHCP...

You may find that if let the router assign the DNS you still get access to Internet and that being specific is too much.

Have you tried that?

I forgot to ask, but have you been able to setup any additional connection between the laptop and the PC ?

===

If not, are able to at least get internet from either machine.

===

If you are struggling to get a 'workgroup' type connection between your machines but you get internet on each one, it will be something perculiar the windows side of things and what you will need to do is right click on the PC, click properties, computer name and then click the button named 'change'. Follow the process for creating a workgroup.

The workgroup settings will enable file transfers etc to happen and should not interfere with the internet settings.

Give that a go and post back with the results.
