TheCommonCold is on a distinguished road

I just recently bought an M811LU PCCHIPS motherboard to build my first computer. I installed Windows, everything was good, then suddenly it just turned off. My friend says the mobo might be dead. However, after i unplug the compy and plug it back in and press the power button, it will turn on for a half second. The fan will go and it'll sound like it's powing up, but then it suddenly turns off again. Any help would be much appreciated!

sounds like a cpu problem. i mean it might be the mobo but it sounds like the cpu is bad. does it power on for a like 1 sec and go off or is it on for a few seconds? from what ive experienced, if it just flashes the power (like the fans turn like one rotation only and everything just flashes on and off) then that means the cpu is bad. but if it is on for like 10-30 seconds that means the cpu might be overheating. if so, check the thermal paste and make sure the cpu fan is turning and is in the cpu fan slot.

EDIT: also look at your manuel if you have it. i know PCCHIPS isnt the greatest company but i have made office computers in the past using these and they usually dont give me a hard time.

It flashes power for about a half second before turning on. However, i have somehow gotten the computer to work by unplugging the motherboards powersupply then plugging it back in a while later. Then it turned on just fine. However, it did die on my again when i plugged a LAN cable into the mobo. But i did the thing with the power and it worked again. I'm actually replying to this with my computer that was giving me problems.

One thing though, whenever I try and move the computer around while it's running, it shuts off again. Could this be a problem of something not being connected correctly?

Could be

You'll need to check to make sure that everything is seated correctly (PCI slots and AGP). Also make sure that the memory and CPU are seated correctly also.

You may find that the Power supply is dodgy...maybe the cable is not clicking in properly...

It is hard to say.

Remember the golden rule...test one thing at a time. write it down on a pad and go through a set of things.

- everything seated (tick or cross)
- CPU frequency correct (tick or cross
- etc
- etc

That is going to be the most gruelling but most successful method I think...

Concentrate your first effort on testing the pwr supply though...look at the cable closely and examine the quality of the connection to mobo...sounds like it might be moving...
