P4 Temperature Question

Hey, i just built myself a new P4 2.8 Gig Computer, but my CPU temperature is around 145 F or 64C. This seems to high to me, plus i've checked the internet, and most sites say that 40C is the right temp for a P4 processor.

Another point, on my stock HSF that i used it had a puddy like substance on the bottom used to transfer the heat away from the processor. I was wondering if maybe this stuff is crap and i should get a new HSF. Anyone have any thoughts?

the newer p4's do run a lot hotter than the older ones, specailly using the stick cooler and paste that come with the processor.

First make sure that the problem is actually the cooling for the chip, with the additional heat in the system it may not be getting proper airflow. Pull the side off and run it for a while, and see how much the temp drops. On a well cooled system, you should see less than 5 degrees, if more than you need to work on the system cooling first.

The processors don't burn out till they hit like 85-90C, but I recomend buying a good thermal paste and trying that before actaually jumping to the Heatsink/Fan. But if you have the money, just buy a high end HSF and paste and just get it taken care of.

oh and don';t just look at temp - they are all releative to the the ambient air temp - which most ppl seem to forget during the summertime. I usually sit about 10 over room for the chipset and sbout 40 over for the proc (those are farenhiet)

Thanks for the info. I went out and did get a better HSF, and i checked the difference in temperatures. Now this new fan is working only half as hard as the stock HSF, and it did cool down a few degrees. Plus, taking off the side had very little impact on the temperature. So now my CPU temp is around the high 50's C. I hope this is ok for my processor... I only have the HSF and one rear fan. Do you think i should add a front fan? Will that help? Or is it not really necessary?
