Windows XP Wont Shutdown

Ok, it all started when we got Comcast Cable modem. About a week later, my computer was going slow as all hell, and i ran my anti virus. It fount 2 infected files with the Downloader.Trojan in my temporary internet files. But it said it got rid of it. Then my comp started actin up real bad. going even slower. So i ran my Ad Aware program and got rid of all this spyware, and adware. But that didnt fix the problem either. So i did a system restore, to the day i got my cable internet. and everything was fixed. Then 10 minutes later when im on the internet, it said i was infected with the same virus. and a buncha pop ups said i was infected with ad ware and spy ware. so i did another system restore. then i noticed my Aim was out of date so i updated it, after the installation it said restart my comp, i said yes, and it said im missing idlemon.dll, i downloaded it, put it in the system folder, and my computer wont shut down now. The only way to shut it down is by pushing in the turn on button for 5 seconds or going to standby mode, then moving the mouse, let it come back to the welcome screen and then hit the turn off button from the corner. Am i missing some files or somthin? I also did a whole drive defragment. Could this have done it? and doing the procedure i do to shut down my comp from the welcome screen, is that hazardous too?

Oh and i forgot, i got this computer at christmas, and out of no where my cd rom drive stopped working, so we got an external cd-Rw drive that connects via USB 2.0 port, if that helps too..

few ideas

make sure both your AV and Adaware definitions are all up to date.

download spybot search and destroy, it cleans up what adaware leaves behind and its free at www.download.com

use all the scanners and if you're still having problems, hit control-alt-del and look over the programs that are running on your computer. run a google search on the ones that seem unfamiliar

programs like tskmgr, svchost, and system idle process are all common windows programs. so if you're unsure of anything research it. if you find out you have something viri or spyware related, try to manually shut it down, and remove it. if you cant get rid of it manually, go into safe mode and delete it.

to bring up a list of what programs start up on your machine, go to start---run----and then either 'msconfig' or 'services.msc'

also make sure you have all the updates from windowsupdate.com

make sure you have the latest drivers for your hardware as well.

and if all that still does not work, unplug any newly added hardware and see if this resolves your problem.

if not, reinstall windows

hope this helps

XP Home

If you are using XP Home...you may want to delete Client for Windows Networking from the network properties section and see if that fixes it. I had a similar problem with a machine I worked on that connected to ADSL via a Netgear modem.

After some time, I isolated the problem to some glitch with Client for Windows Networks. After that, the system would shutdown properly.

I have not been able to figure out why this is so.
