Media I whant your opinion on something (please Read)

Hi my name is Adam, and I have had this thing going on between me and someone named, Andy Hendrickson. For year we have trying to prove who is better with and knows more about computers. Andy has more of an advantage he’s rich and I middle class you could say. I’m 14 going to start High School soon, he is 13 going into 8th grade, so we will be at different schools. Well that brings me to this. I want to do something that will prove who is the best, and that is to have a contest to see who can build the best computer. I want to know if you think the parts I’m going to use will guarantee me the win.

1. Custom built clear plexy glass case with metal trim (Im going to mount all the components –drives, motherboard, ext.- to the sides of the plexy with out using any bays)
2. Duel 2.5GHz Intel Pentium 4 processors totaling 5.0GHz
3. Radeon 9200 video card 128MB DDR
4. Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card
5. 40GB hard drive for applications and a 80GB hard drive for other stuff
6. CD-ROM drive and a super drive (CD-RW, DVD-RW)
7. Selector panel that allows you to set the temp that the fans will turn on at and select the speed of the fans and also will let you set the brightness of the case lights and turn them on and off
8. Fire Wire and USB 2.0 PCI card
9. Dazzle video capture card
10. Modem and Ethernet card
11. Apple © mouse and keyboard
12. Apple © Pro Audio Speakers
13. Apple © Cinema Display
14. Windows XP, and Linux
15. Adobe Premiere Pro, Photo Shop, Encore DVD, After Effects
I feel this is going to be one kick ass machine

You said that out wanted opinions.... That isn't going to win, unless your friend has some serious mental problems or is low on cash.
No doubt that is a kickass machine, but it would be really easy to build something better.

My question to you, Do you already have most of these parts, or will you be buying them new/used?

not sure what you mean by mounting drives driectly to the case without bases??? I'll assume you mean your going to screw it directly to the sides?? Don't forget to drill holes for several case fans and go with some lights, not to mention rounded wires

you don't mention which board you'll be using??
your video card is seriously lacking...
40g and 80g hdd's could be bigger thats not really much for storage
not sure why you'd go with a cd and a dual format drive setup I'd go with cd-rw and then a dvd-rw seperately...

I'd say if you do a little more homework you could build alot better system

good exept the fact that your wanting a dual cpu machine. this isnt made for performance, its made for servers. the dual cpus act almost like dual channel RAM, meaning you wont see a big difference in performace. you will however have great improvment in networking capability and ability to send and recieve large files through your network. i say go with a good mobo and mobile XP 2400+. cool case idea. i have a lot of things like that for sale on my thread.

check it out, it might help you build this system of your dreams.

What is for?

Looks interesting...

The main question is what you invisage doing with the computer.

If it is going to be games, exchange dual processor power for graphics and sound.

If it is for office appz and that sort of thing, focus on AMD CPU, more RAM and maybe bigger hard drive.

You gotta tailor the system to a specific purpose or set of purposes. The more you want it to do the more you have to spend across a range of features.

Systems

I’m trying to build a low cost system for the purpose of video editing. You PC guy are going to hate for saying this, but I want a system that can compete with the Apple G5.

I hate to admit it, but I'd rather be a rich, dumb, young guy than a poor, old, smart guy!

Seriously, though, this competition isn't really going to establish who's "better". You two sound like you have a pretty common interest, and BOTH could benefit from helping each other on both machines.

EDIT: Man, do I sound like a freaking HS guidance counselor, or what?

Well since you plan on doing mostly video editing I'd go with a raid set-up. Looks like your an intel fan or I'd suggest going with a different CPU. Don't forget you'll need alot of RAM seems most of us overlooked the fact you didn't list any at all.

The 9800pro would be a nice touch and there are plenty of great deals out there for them right now. IMO there are probably better cards for video editingwaiting for RobRich to step in
