More info dude

Need to know what it is saying to you...

If it is saying there is already an os on the drive that means a format is necessary.

ummm...

WinXP Pro will load on that machine...and it should work comfortably.

Put more info out here and i think you'll get more help.

i have formated the HDD already and it has now a patition of 5gb and 5gb one in fat32 and the other in NTFS

the old OS was installed on the FAT32 which i named c: and i want to keep my data in the NTFS drive labelled D:

i had a win xp home before but it suddenly crashed and the windows could not bootup so i formatted it (an error message comes up before the bootup screen..........forgot what it said but i just can't do anything about it)

and now it wouldn't install

NB: my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive and can't read any external drives when bootup (there isn't an option in the BIOS) but i have a CD drive

and i have every windows versons....95, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP HOME and PRO..............also i have patition magic.....

but only 98SE and 2000 will bootup probably and went into the installation of the windows but 98SE corupted in mid way 2000 was fine but i only want xp home......

tried xp home....and it sometimes bootup but always come up with file corruptions but i have used the disk to install xp home on another PC and it worked fine so i don't think its the problem with the disk..........

thank you

I dunno

Yeah...I am unsure what you can do with it.

===

You need to get hold of memtest and you also need to check the status of your hard drive...(laptop) because these are two areas that Win XP Home is sensitive about.

www.memtest86.com

do a search on this forum to see where to get knoppix (a linux tool) as it is said to be worthwhile...and I think it is free.

I know that Dell for example, tend to want users to go with Win XP Pro on the laptops as it has more features and is more stable.

But memory is a thing that typically causes probs, particularly as systems age.

What was the error message that you were getting?

Have you tried installing Windows 2000 and upgrading to XP?
