standby/hibernate failure

hi, I looked first in FAQs and several other topics, and actually found one that was pretty close, but not quite it.

Am using xp, motherboard a Gigabyte P4 Titan. After working properly for nearly a year, my system will not go to standby or hibernate. "System Standby [Hibernate] Failed. The device driver for the 'Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all app....."

The topic I found that was close was that the com port was preventing standby. the remedies i found in that thread did not do the trick.

any ideas? thanks...

Have you tried uninstalling and clean installing the driver?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have uninstalled and clean installed the driver; I have switched keyboards, and installed the latest driver for the new keyboard. I even went into device manager, chasing after a remedy to a nearly identical error on a different thread i was reading. This person was prevented from entering standby or hibernate with a similar error, but it was a com port, not the keyboard driver. this person fixed his problem by going into device manager, usb controllers, usb root hub: properties: power management, and unchecking the box marked "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". unfortunately no such option was available for me with the keyboard driver.

really running out of ideas. i wonder if i have to go into bios...
thanks again.

What was the source of the clean driver?

good question...as the microsoft natural elite keyboard doesn't come with a unique driver, and is run by the standard driver that comes with windows, the source is xp (?). now, i tried to reload it clean from the xp cd, but that didn't work...

since you asked such a perceptive question, perhaps you could answer the deeper question: do I really need to put my computer on hibernate, or can I just leave it on all the time, provided the room is cool and well ventilated? Can the fan handle being on indefinitely?

The driver on your harddrive may be corrupted. Since you haven't actually installed a clean driver, you haven't actually changed the the driver. If the driver is bad, you just keep reinstalling the same bad driver over and over and over again.

Have you tried updating the driver from CD (versus uninstalling the driver and letting Windows reinstall the same one again)?

thanks, yes i have tried to reinstall from the xp installation cd, but I guess I was doing it wrong, because it said driver not found.
BTW, some guy just told me to leave it on all the time and forget about standby/hibernate, as long as the monitor shuts itself it'll be OK.
