my screen blacks out then bunch of lines

Seriously, though, we'll need a little more than that. OS, vidcard, mobo model, circumstances of screen blackout (does it work, but flick out after a while? if so, how long?), etc.

If you have a newer graphics card it may be due to your power supply. i had the exact problem with alot of newer cards. Also check capaciters on your MB for leaking or bulging. This can affect power consumption.

i used to get a black screen with a multicolored line across the top when my video card overheated, or I tried to set it to something it didn't like - just replaced the vid card - a lot easier than messing with it

Sounds like your video card is overheating or dying out perhaps there right though little more info would help give a better answer to your question
