Computer Problems!

I need help bad.

This morning i went to go on the net to check some stuff out. couldnt connect to the net. reset my modem, didnt do anything. Called cox techs to see what the deal was and nothing on there end, told me it could be my hub. so i connected my comp thru the modem and no hub and noting. got on my sisters comp(on it now) and it works fine thru the hub and modem.

i am noticing that my anti virus and firewall isnt opening on boot or when i try to open them after the boot. i went into safe mode and tried to open up my anti virus there and still wont open. i'm guessing i have a virus but i'm not sure. i would give comp specs but its been so long since i got it that i forgot everything, if theres a way to check them lemmy know and i'll get them for you. only thing i know is that its on win98(i know i need to upgrade).

someone please help!

my opinion, backup your important files and documents and such and reformat and install XP.

have you tried reinstalling anti virus program? if you could get that working maybe it would in fact detect a virus, like you suspect.

Though reformatting will take care of most problems and is often thrown out as a fix, it can be a major pain to get prepared (data backup, saving local emails, favorites, etc).

Keep trying and maybe you'll have some luck. IF not.....wipe it.

I do think that a fresh install of your current os would be helpful at some point. Fresh systems are great, just back up everything and make sure you have your original os disk and serial before you start. Microsoft can and will likely charge you around $10 for a new serial.

Good luck.

You can try putting your Hard Drive to another computer as slave

(the computer in which you are going to put your HDD must have an Antivirus program of course, and have it updated)

then scan your HDD and you will see if you have a virus.

Go to your start button..then go to run and type

MSCONFIG

go to the SYSTEM.INI teb and click on the + sign to it left

it should say

Shell=Explorer.exe

Example : Shell=explorer.exe worm

if it looks anything like that...you have a virus

locate that file and go into safe mode or dos mode and delete it

then delete it from your registry
