windows XP hangs on desktop at startup

Okay here's the thing. I boot up fine, goto login window and login as admin. The desktop shows up, but no icons or anything...just background image. I can CTRL+ALT+DEL and there's no odd files running that I can see.

I can boot in safe mode FINE, absolutely no problems there. I've tried system restores (doesn't work), tried checking device manager/startup options (nothing wrong here). What the hell could possibly be wrong? Please help...

Well, the way I understand it is that the Icons are not shown and it might be because they are set not to be there.

You can try:

Right click on Desktop and choose Arrange Icons by > Show Desktop Icons.

If that does not work it might be that some icons such as your My Computer icon and all those are not to be shown.

Go Right click Desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customise Desktop then check the My Computer check box and all the others.

That should do it.

Okay I think the reason it isn't showing the icons is it won't load them because it's loading so slow! The ctrl+alt+del menu takes like 15 minutes to load up, and it's sluggish as hell

HOWEVER, safe mode is insanely fast. I turned off all startups for normal boot, so what could be the problem?
